Registering for the TOEFL

Like so many other tests and exams, you'll need to register for the TOEFL, you'll need to register in advance.  Be sure to work this extra time into your plans of studying aboard as the schools you would like to study at may require a TOEFL score before they can finish considering your application for admissions.

Step One:  Locate your testing Centre

The best place to find this information is from the TOEFL Website.  By getting the information directly from the site, you'll have the most accurate list of testing facilities.  As of May, 2008 the following locations offered testing in India*:

* Note that test centres are located either in the city listed, or within a 50 mile radius of that city.  For example, the test centre in Gurgaon could be located either within the city limits of Gurgaon, or within a 50 mile radius of the city.

Along with the locations of testing centres, you will find out what kind of test is available to take.  Most centres will offer the iBT, however those who cannot will offer the PBT.  Once you have figured which test format you will be taking (iBT or PBT) you are ready for step two.  You will also find what dates are currently available for testing as well as the cost of the test.  Tests occur most frequently on Saturdays, and Sundays however if you practice a religion that observes the Sabbath, special arrangements can be made. 

On this page you will also find the basic cost of writing the TOEFL at that location.  Again, it is important to check your specific location as the cost of the TOEFL varies from country to country.


Step Two: Download the TOEFL Bulletin
The TOEFL bulletin is an in depth guide to registering for the TOEFL.  This guide is free and available from the TOEFL Website, specifically, here for the iBT Bulletin, and here for the PBT Bulletin.  Make sure you get the guide that matches the test you will be taking.  These booklets include the registration forms, information of fees and what identification you will need to bring with you, break down of additional fees (late registration fee, rescoring fees, and additional score recipient's requests).


Step Three:  Register

iBT Format
There are 3 ways you can register for the TOEFL iBT format.

Online via the TOEFL Website
This most be done at least 7 days before the actual date of your test (not including the date you write) if you want to avoid late fees.  Late registration will cost you an extra $25 USD, however you can still register, with the late fee up to 3 days before you plan to write (not including the date you write, space permitting).   If you need to reschedule the test  once you register you can, however there is a $50 USD rescheduling fee.  You can reschedule or cancel the test no later then 3 days before you write (not including the day you write).  If you cancel after this time, you will receive no refund.

In addition to the convenience of being able to register whenever you would like online, you can also use your username and password to return to the site and easily change your registration, view your scores, place additional score requests and more.


Phone
Again, this most be done at least 7 days before the actual date of your test (not including the date you write) if you want to avoid late fees.  Late registration will cost you an extra $25 USD, however you can still register, with the late fee up to 3 days before you plan to write (not including the date you write, space permitting).   If you need to reschedule the test  once you register you can, however there is a $50 USD rescheduling fee.  You can reschedule or cancel the test no later then 3 days before you write (not including the day you write).  If you cancel after this time, you will receive no refund.

If you plan to take your test in Canada, The United States, or The United Sates Territories, call 1-800-468-6335. to register. 
If you live outside the United States, but would like to test in the US, you can call 1-443-751-4862 to register.
If you live in India and would like to test in India, call 91-124-4147700
If you live outside of the regions mentioned above and would like to test in that area, please refer to the Bulletin for the specific number for your country.
If you use a teletypewriter (TTY), call 1-800-529-3590 no matter where you live or plan to take your test.


Mail
If you are registering by mail, your registration request must be received at least 4 weeks before your first-choice test date.  Please allow sufficient time for this.  All the forms that you will need to complete to register for the TOEFL by mail are located in the TOEFL Bulletin, and you should refer to this for the most up-to-date forms, as well as explicate instructions.

If you planning to test in Canada, The United States, or The United States Territories, mail you registration, and payment to:

TOEFL PBT
There are 2 ways you can register for the PBT format. 
Remeber, the PBT is only offered in locations where the iBT is not.  If the iBT format is offered in your area, you must take the test in that format.

Online via the TOEFL Website
